The land over which the ancient Maya
established their great city-states is just as rich, wondrous
and diverse as the civilization itself. Our twenty-two day journey through the Maya world takes us through a myriad
of landscapes and ecosystems: lush green rainforests
teeming with life, mountain highlands where the modern
Maya still maintain many of their ancient ways, the unique
sinkhole- and cave-pocked Yucatan Peninsula, waterfall-
and mist-laden cloud forests, and the crystal clear
waters and immense barrier reef off the Caribbean
coast. Throughout our journey we will explore and admire
the great Maya sites such as Chichen Itza, Coba, Uxmal,
Tikal and Palenque, allowing plenty of time at
each to marvel at the pyramids, monuments, stelae and
hieroglyphics of this wondrous and ancient people. And
our trip is far from just a tour of the ancient Maya
kingdoms: we'll snorkel (or dive if certified) off
Belize's barrier reef, hit the Caribbean surf and
sand, take guided rainforest walks, trek to
highland Mayan villages, bargain and shop in the
colorful markets of Merida and San Cristobal, float
down Mexico's stunning Sumidero Canyon, and explore waterfalls,
caves and Yucatan's "sacred sinkholes"
along the way.
