Doug
Newton, a native of St. Petersburg, USA, first traveled to Latin America in
the early nineties, living in Guatemala and teaching English. He has been going back ever since, traveling
extensively throughout Central and South America and leading backpacking and adventure
tours. Along the way, he also earned a bachelor's degree in South American
Languages, studying Portuguese in Brazil, Quechua in Peru and Aymara in La
Paz, Bolivia. He was already fluent in Spanish. Between tours, Doug is
currently pursuing a master's degree in Spanish Education, hoping to soon
combine his love of teaching with adventure tourism in a unique travel-study program. Besides languages, Doug's
passion is trekking, particularly to ruins. The wonderful thing about trekking
in the Andes, he says, is that no matter where you are, you always find
yourself on an old Inca road.
